    Le Cercle and Aix en Provence economic forum
Each year in July the ’Cercle des Economistes’ organizes a week-end seminar on a current economic topic. The purpose of those week-ends is to hear the viewpoints of specialists selected for their expertise by a scientific committee and to come out with recommendations deemed essential by the participants to the attention of the public and governments.

Since July 2001, this initiative has generated a great deal of interest and has led the members of the “Cercle des Economistes” and the participating corporations to agree on the principle of a regular annual meeting.

• The 2001 Forum “Is the European Construction Running out of Steam ?” was concluded by Hubert Védrine, French Minister of Foreign Affairs.

• The 2002 Forum “Europe and the World Governance” was opened by Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize in Economics and concluded notably, by Alain Juppé and Hubert Védrine, both French former ministers.

• The 2003 Forum was launched by Abdou Diouf (Secrétaire Général de la Francophonie) and Érik Orsenna (Académie Française) and focussed around the theme of “Europe, a New World Economy”.

• The 2004 Forum was devoted to “European Companies and Global Competition” with Mario Monti, the European commissionary.

• In 2005, the topic was : ”Europe and the United States” with Madeleine Albright as participant and guest of honour.

• In 2006, it was “A World of Scarce Resources” with Edouard Brézin, Académie des Sciences, Thierry Desmarest, Total CEO, Pr. Francis Fukuyama, Johns Hopkins University, Érik Orsenna.

• In 2007, Roberto Lavagna, former Minister of Finance and candidate to the presidential election of Argentina opened the 2007 forum on “What Kinds of Capitalisms for the 21st Century”. Among many contributors, two Nobel prize-winners, Myron Scholes and Edmund Phelps, David Rubenstein (The Carlyle Group), Ernesto Zedillo (former President of Mexico), Joschka Fischer (former German Minister of Foreign Affairs) ...

• The 2008 Aix-en-Provence economic forum was devoted to “Firms : the new frontiers”. It was opened by Nobel Prize in economics Robert C. Merton. Over 30 French and foreign CEOs participated along with numerous academics, notably from the universities of Berkeley, Bocconi, Cambridge, Chicago, Harvard, Lyon II, Max Planck Institute, MIT, Paul Cézanne Aix-Marseille, Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, Paris II Panthéon Assas, Paris VIII Vincennes Saint Denis, Paris IX Dauphine, Paris X Nanterre, Stanford, UCLA, Vanderbilt...This 2008 edition of the forum was concluded by a debate between the Chairman of the Central Bank of Argentina, Martin Redrado, the Director General of the International Labour Organization, Juan Somavia, the President of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, and Hubert Védrine, former French Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The forum takes place in Aix-en-Provence, in partnership with the Aix-Marseille University and the Aix Festival.

The 2009 forum will take place on July 3th, 4th and 5th. The central topic will be :
